Mark Making

Mark making is the method of applying a material on any surface using any tool.

In this lesson, we were asked to draw 20 boxes (4cm x 4cm in size). Within these boxes, we had to add texture by applying different pressures, positions and movement of the pencil.

Some boxes were darker than others which showed how much pressure I exerted and the thickness of the pencil I used. In comparison, some boxes were lighter and so I used a more fluent hand gesture to create the thin strokes.

Some boxes show harsh lines, this portrays the quick pace I drew them in. Each box varies in tone, structure, quantity and depth which helps provide a better understanding of texture and how it can be applied to all artwork, whether it be sketching, painting or collage.
